Salmon and Steelhead

Plug Fishing: Plugs or swimming lures are used both for Salmon and Steelhead. Most commonly used with level line rods, fished from the boat using the current to sink the lure into the strike zone. No casting needed.

Spin Gear: Used for Salmon and Steelhead side drifting bait, casting lures and bug and bubble.

  • Fishing for Salmon on the Rogue RiverSide Drifting: Casting bait and a slinky weight, drifts the rigging into deep channels.
  • Spinning Lures: Casting spinners into small pockets behind rocks, eddy lines and tail-outs.
  • Bug an Bubble: Fishing flies with spinning gear. Use two heavy flies as bait and a floating indicator. This technique was developed as an option in the fly only waters

Pulling Flies: Also known as the “Rogue River Twitch”, this technique requires minimal to no casting. Perfect for the beginner or experience angler looking for a more relaxing pursuit of steelhead.

Bryce, thank you for the pictures I’ll have a couple of sets made for the kids to take to school. We appreciated your professionalism and the courtesy that all of the staff at Morrison’s showed us while we were there. The children certainly want to come back to fish again with you and Zac, we’ll see you sometime next year in the early fall for more Steelhead fishing. Regards, Robert, CA

Chinook or “KING” Salmon

Salmon & Steelhead

Season: Late August thru Mid September

Chinook salmon fishing is a bit different than Steelhead. Guides like to be on the river at first morning light and will tend to work a section of river, or one hole, for a longer period of time. Salmon fishing is all done with bait or lures. Occasionally you can fish salmon and steelhead in the same run. Usually guests will be getting back to the lodge by early afternoon.
